Representation matters

Representation matters

As a small service provider in DEI spaces, the extent of representation that I can bring to my work is limited by 2 things: (1) My own identities, and (2) The input and consultation that a client builds into (or makes available during) their project. This notion of representation relates closely to conversations I’ve heard from the east around “first voice”, and from disability discourse around “Nothing about us without us”.

As a non-Indigenous person, I recently hesitated to bid on a project whose purpose is integrally linked with the TRC’s Call to Action #92. Fortunately, the call for bids made it clear that not only would collaboration with Indigenous representatives be available, it would indeed be a requirement of the work.

We all play a part in ensuring that equity-owed groups are directly involved in what impacts them.
